Utility RFID can apply to electric, water, wastewater, gas, field service, warehouse, depot, yard, and maintenance operations where physical assets, tools, meters, parts, or equipment need better identity and event history.

The right architecture depends on where a reliable read can happen. Warehouses, depots, yards, gates, trucks, and inspection points are often more realistic read environments than widely dispersed or buried field assets.

RFID can support field identification when the asset is reachable, tagged, and readable by a handheld or vehicle-mounted reader. For continuous geographic tracking of dispersed outdoor assets, GPS or another technology may be more appropriate.

Utility records need events, not just tag reads

RFID identifies the asset, tool, meter, part, vehicle, kit, or component. Software records the business context: assignment, status, last event, maintenance action, inspection reference, issue/return history, yard movement, or exception.

Fit check

When RFID may not be the primary utility tracking tool

RFID may not fit when the asset is deeply buried, too far from any practical reader, not safely taggable, or expected to report continuous outdoor location. In those cases, GPS, GIS records, barcode, sensors, cellular devices, or a mixed architecture may be better.
