Distribution means the work inside the facility

Distribution center RFID is about what happens inside the warehouse: receiving, storage, movement, picking, packing, staging, dock movement, and exception handling. It should not be confused with the broader transportation and logistics workflow between facilities, yards, trailers, carriers, and handoffs.

The useful result is not a larger pile of tag reads. It is a trusted event that the WMS, ERP, order system, Rocket Tracked, or Rocket Shipped workflow can act on.

Where RFID can fit in a distribution center

Picking

RFID pick-and-pack validation

RFID can help verify picked goods when the tagged item, case, carton, tote, or pallet is read at a practical point in the workflow. The system should compare reads with the expected pick, order, carton, or shipment data and route exceptions to a user before the process moves downstream.

Shipping

Outbound shipment verification

Rocket Shipped is the software path when the priority is expected-vs-read shipment verification. Dock door portalsprovide fixed reader infrastructure when the shipping or receiving door is the physical control point.

Architecture

Handheld, station, or fixed read point

A distribution center may need multiple read patterns. Handheld RFID supports flexible inventory and search. Station readers support repeatable packing or verification steps. Fixed readers and portals work best where movement passes a defined control point.

The system should define which reads count, which reads are ignored, how exceptions are reviewed, and what data is sent back to the warehouse system.

Common options

  • Handheld readers for cycle counts, aisle scans, search, and exception work
  • Packing-station readers for pick-and-pack validation
  • Dock door portals for repeatable inbound and outbound movement events
  • RFID printers or encoders when labels must be commissioned before receiving or shipping
  • Rocket Shipped when the main need is shipment verification
  • Rocket Tracked when assets, totes, equipment, or inventory records need ongoing history

Fit check

RFID is strongest when the process has repeatable events

RFID may be a strong fit when line-of-sight barcode scanning slows receiving, picking, packing, inventory, or shipping. It may not be justified when volumes are low, items are not tagged, materials block reliable reads, or the exception process is not defined.
