RFID for Agriculture

Use RFID to identify livestock, equipment, containers, gates, bins, supplies, and farm inventory when the tag, reader, and software record are designed around the agricultural workflow.

Livestock identification

RFID animal identity connects the animal to a record

RFID livestock tags can identify an animal at a chute, gate, pen, barn, loading point, or handheld scan. The RFID tag does not measure health, weight, vaccination status, or ownership by itself. It identifies the animal so software can retrieve or update the associated record.

Different animal-identification workflows may use different RFID frequencies and tag standards. Passive UHF can be useful for some gate, farm, and workflow reads, but official animal-identification requirements should be confirmed before a regulatory claim is made.

Gate and chute reads

Fixed read points for controlled animal flow

Gates, chutes, barns, loading lanes, and processing areas can be practical places to read RFID tags because animal movement is constrained. Reader placement, antenna angle, animal spacing, speed, and tag orientation all affect performance.

Handheld reads

Flexible reads for field and pen workflows

Handheld RFID readers can support animal checks, inventory, exception work, and local scans when the operator can get close enough and the tag can be presented in a readable orientation.

Fit check

RFID is not the same as GPS or sensor measurement

RFID is strongest for identity and read events. GPS, sensors, scales, and other systems may be needed when the requirement is continuous outdoor location, measured weight, health data, temperature, or another condition that RFID does not sense by itself.
